Top 10 Strongest Pokemon in Gen 2's Metagame
I'll be listing the top 10 Pokemons in Generation 2 that made left a large influence in Generation 2's metagame. Along with some honorable mentions that were just barely cut from the top 10 mark. I will be acknowledging the Uber Pokemons on a separate list. This list is based on my perspective although I'm basing my reasoning on data and rational thinking. A majority of the Pokemons on this list are how well they were able to do in Gen 2's stall metagame.
10. Misdreavus
9. Forretress
8. Heracross
7. Starmie
6. Raikou
5. Tyranitar
4. Suicune
3. Blissey
2. Skarmory
1. Snorlax
If you guys have your own list of what you think were the most powerful Pokemon in Gen 2 or any criticisms or questions you may have, I'd love to hear them.
- Honorable Mentions:
10. Misdreavus
- Misdreavus's Text:
- Misdreavus held a good place during the stall-based metagame due to being able to learn "Mean Look" to lock the current Pokemon to the battlefield and then doing "Perish Song" which at that point guarantees the opposing Pokemon will go down with Misdreavus. I'm sure I don't have to elaborate too much why this is important considering Gen 2's metagame is mostly built on stalling and being able to guarantee a removal of any wall Pokemon.
9. Forretress
- Forretress's Text:
- Forretress was a very prominent Pokemon in Gen 2. It is able to set down "Spikes", "Rapid Spin" and use the move "Explosion" which is very useful in the format it had debut.
8. Heracross
- Heracross's Text:
- Steel and Dark were newly introduced typings in Gen 2, both of which resist Psychic and Dark being completely immune to Psychic. Both of these new typings were weak to the Fighting-type which made Heracross very useful in this format since Steel and Dark were common typings to have on an average team along with it being the only move super-effective against the Normal-Type, considering Heracross was the best Fighting-type of this Generation.
7. Starmie
- Starmie's Text:
- A Pokemon that retained its usefulness from Gen 1 although slightly modified for this format. Starmie was able to learn "Rapid Spin" which is already useful on top of having amazing Speed and Sp.Atk and being one of the few types that Steel doesn't resist. Although on the down side, if a Dark-type Pokemon with "Pursuit" was switched in, Starmie is as good as done.
6. Raikou
- Raikou's Text:
- Raikou is a change of pace from the usual Pokemon you'd expect in this format. Not at all related stall, most Raikou are expected to have "Thunderbolt" to take advantage of high Speed, high Sp.Atk and STAB along with "Roar" which boasts to be very useful when wanting to force switch a Pokemon that is setting up.
5. Tyranitar
- Tyranitar's Text:
- Before he became a staple Sand Summoner Pokemon, Tyranitar was both a great Defensive Pokemon, Offensive Pokemon on top of already being a great counter to Psychic-types. When Tyranitar is switched in against a Psychic-type, the Psychic Pokemon is done for. Attempting to switch out will be met with "Pursuit" and any attempt to do any damage to Tyranitar will be walled from Tyranitar's immense Sp.Def and HP.
4. Suicune
- Suicune's Text:
- Suicune is one of the best defensive Pokemons in Gen 2. Boasting a supreme Def and Sp.Def stat with a decent Sp.Atk. Half of the time you'll see Suicune asleep from the RestTalk strategy that originated in this format. Suicune was effective mostly from the fact that he was difficult to faint since there didn't exist many good Grass-types making his primary weakness Electric and any form of damage would be patched from "Rest" while still being able to retaliate.
3. Blissey
- Blissey's Text:
- One half of the most effective defensive duos in Gen 2. Blissey had a ridiculous amount of HP and Sp.Def effectively walling any special attack from the opponent. If met with a Pokemon that is physical, you would switch into Skarmory. What made this strategy effective is that Blissey's weakness of Fighting-type was mitigate by Skarmory's dual-Flying type on top of being immune to Earthquake which has always been a popular move since Gen 1.
2. Skarmory
- Skarmory's Text:
- The other half of the SkarmBliss strategy. As said before about covering Blissey's weakness. Blissey covered Skarmory's weakness of Electric and Fire since before Gen 4, moves were dependent on type whether they are physical or special. And both Fire and Electric were considered special moves which Blissey walled out very effectively. On top of that, Skarmory was a good check to Snorlax which not many Pokemon can share that title.
1. Snorlax
- Snorlax's Text:
- Behold the King of Gen 2's metagame. Every Generation introduced something new that changed the metagame completely. For Gen 2, it was the introduction of "Curse". "Curse" is a status move that raises Atk and Def by one stage and lowers speed by 1 stage. This move was what greatly shaped how Gen 2's metagame would be predominantly fought, mostly setting up and healing with the use of "Rest" before attacking.
Snorlax already has great Atk and Sp.Def. His low Physical Defense was quickly mitigated with "Curse". And any damage that Snorlax would sustain from setting up was quickly patched up from "Rest" and Leftovers. Which at the time, Leftovers seemingly the only item used for everyone Pokemon, even non-defensive Pokemon. Snorlax is the perfect representation of Gen 2's metagame where, as mentioned many times before, is mostly based on stalling. Thus making Snorlax, my pick for the best Pokemon of Generation 2.
If you guys have your own list of what you think were the most powerful Pokemon in Gen 2 or any criticisms or questions you may have, I'd love to hear them.

Umm Snorlax and Starmie are tech Gen 1 tho. Also no Umbreon, your list is invalid. Jk. But I'd say drop Starmie for Sneasel and put Umby at 10

Re: Top 10 Strongest Pokemon in Gen 2's Metagame
The list compiles the list of Pokemon by the metagame of that era rather than a list of Pokemon that originated from Gen 2. And I do somewhat agree that Umbreon should have at least made an honorable mention although I felt he made better strides as the metagame evolved. Much of the tools that made Umbreon good didn't exist until Gen 3-5. And Sneasel didn't make too much of an impact overall.

Re: Top 10 Strongest Pokemon in Gen 2's Metagame
Porygon 2 had access to Curse, Recover, Thunder Wave with good balanced stats which meant that the Pokemon was versatile. Being one of the best paralysis inducers and taking advantage of the raised stats from Curse made him tough and hit hard. Although the reason he was an honorable mention was mainly because Snorlax achieves a lot of the same and debatably does it more efficient which made Porygon2 overshadowed for the most part.
