Top 10 Strongest Pokemon from Gen 1's Metagame
I'll list the top 10 Pokemons in Generation 1 that had a really strong influence during Generation 1's metagame. Along with some honorable mentions that were just barely cut from the top 10 mark. I won't be listing the only 2 Uber Pokemons although I will acknowledge them separately from the list. Of course this list is based on my own perspective although I will be basing my point-of-view on reasoning and data to why these Pokemons are on the list. A couple of the Pokemons on the list are exceedingly strong from some of the flaws, exploits or overall bad design from a couple of game mechanics of Generation 1.
10. Persian
9. Slowbro
8. Jolteon
7. Dragonite
6. Starmie
5. Chansey
4. Snorlax
3. Tauros
2. Zapdos
1. Alakazam
If you guys have your own list of what you think were the most powerful Pokemon in Gen 1 or any criticisms or questions you may have, I'd love to hear them.
- Honorable Mentions:
10. Persian
- Persian's Text:
- As explained in my post about the metagame history for Gen 1, critical hits were dependent on Speed and not by chance. Meaning that fast Pokemon like Jolteon and Persian had an advantage over slower Pokemon. Not only was Persian critical hit rate already at 25%, using the move 'Slash' increased it to a whopping 99.6%, and on top of that it would gain STAB from both itself and 'Slash' being Normal-types.
9. Slowbro
- Slowbro's Text:
- Slowbro was possibly at his best in Generation 1. He has an outstanding Defense stat already with the ability to learn 'Amnesia'. 'Amnesia' nowadays raises the Sp.Def stat by 2 but in Gen 1, because Sp.Atk and Sp.Def used to be 1 stat known as "Special", it meant that Amnesia rose your Special stat by 2 stages. And with this "Special" stat being 1 stat, it meant that you could take Special Attacks very well while at the same time dealing very good Special Attacks. What this means for Slowbro is that it would be able to withstand many Physical or Special moves. On top of that, this Pokemon is graced with being part Psychic which meant that it had access to STAB Psychic and had an already respectable Special stat to begin with.
8. Jolteon
- Jolteon's Text:
- As said with Persian, faster Pokemons had an advantage by having their Speed stat determine critical hits. As such, Jolteon was another Pokemon that can crit its opponent a lot although why I place it higher than Persian is that Jolteon had access to Fighting-type moves like 'Double Kick' which was good at getting rid of Chansey since she has a low Physical Defense stat and had a fantastic Special stat to withstand Psychic attacks and has access to STAB 'Thunderbolt'. So in short terms, I placed Jolteon higher since he can withstand Psychic attacks much better than Persian.
7. Dragonite
- Dragonite's Text:
- The Dragonite family were the only Dragon-types that existed in Gen 1 although Dragonite met expectations from its typing. It might not be able to take advantage of 'Dragon Rage' since that move always does exactly 40 damage. It did however had access to 'Wrap' and 'Agility' at the same time. What this meant is that you can put your opponent in a lock that would stop them from doing anything since 'Wrap' cancels out the opponent's move and with the use of 'Agility', Dragonite will always go first and trap you in another 'Wrap.'
6. Starmie
- Starmie's Text:
- Another Pokemon blessed with the Psychic-typing and the second on this list with the same dual-typing. Although unlike Slowbro, Starmie was fast and had great sweeping potential and longevity with having a great movepool and access to 'Recover' to regain any lost health. Being Psychic meant that it had a strong Special stat and had access to STAB 'Psychic' along with STAB 'Surf', on top of that, it's Physical Defense was pretty respectable to withstand a couple Physical attacks.
5. Chansey
- Chansey's Text:
- Chansey was at her absolute best in Gen 1. With Sp.Atk and Sp.Def being 1 stat known back then as "Special", Chansey's Special Defense was not only 105 but her Special Attack was also 105. And I don't know what is it with Normal-type Pokemons being able to learn many ranging moves, for example, with Chansey's high Special stat, she was able to take advantage of 'Blizzard', 'Psychic' and 'Thunderbolt'. Her Physical Defense was still critically low although it hardly mattered when Fighting-type Pokemons were non-existent in Gen 1's metagame although as previously mentioned, Jolteon had access to 'Double Kick' to get rid of Chansey walls.
4. Snorlax
- Snorlax's Text:
- If I had to list the 3 best typings in Gen 1 in order, it would be Psychic, Normal and Electric. Normal Pokemon from Gen 1 had a lot of good attributes and a lot of good Pokemons and Snorlax was one of them. Snorlax has both an amazing HP and Attack stat with bulky Defense and Sp.Def (Special). Although Snorlax had access Amnesia as well, meaning that it would be able to raise both its Sp.Atk and Sp.Def. Along with also having access to 'Reflect' to boost its Physical Defense to withstand many Special Attacks and Physical Attacks while able to deal massive amounts of damage with his high Physical Attack and access to STAB 'Hyper Beam' and STAB 'Body Slam'.
3. Tauros
- Tauros's Text:
- Unlike with Chansey, there is not a weakness you can find in Gen 1 Tauros. Although just like with Chansey and the trends of Normal-type Pokemon, Tauros had access to a wide array of moves like 'Blizzard' and 'Fire Blast'. And it was able to take advantage of these moves, even if they are Special, from having a very balanced stat spread. This Pokemon is actually a very good counter to the overly powerful Psychic-types, and just Normal-types in general.
2. Zapdos
- Zapdos's Text:
- Unlike its other Legendary Bird Brothers, Zapdos was safe from Electric attacks since he part Electric already. And as a general rule of thumb, Electric-type Pokmon are fast and have a high special stat, and Zapdos followed this rule as well. Meaning just like with Jolteon, Zapdos had a high critical rate chance and had access to STAB Thunderbolt while being immune to Earthquake and takes normal damage from Electric-type moves.
1. Alakazam
- Alakazam's Text:
- Behold what I believe to be the strongest Pokemon in Gen 1. As a joke, people will say "Psychic-type pokemons only weakness in Gen 1 was another Psychic-type." Which for the most part is true with some exceptions like Tauros being a good counter to Psychic-types although that joke is, for the most part, accurate for Gen 1's metagame. Especially when describing pure Psychic-types. Since the only weakness programmed in Gen 1 as a counter to Psychic-types were Ghost and Bug. Although as a mistake, Ghost-types don't affect Psychic-types and there only existed 2 Bug moves in Gen 1 and both of them sucked.
Alakazam has a low Physical Defense stat although it could hardly be exploited since Pokemons that had a high enough Attack stat most likely meant that they would have a low Special stat. And it doesn't help that Alakazam was the 5th fastest Pokemon in Gen 1 which not only meant that it had a high critical hit chance but it also meant that it one-shoted any Pokemon that tried to exploit its low Defense stat. On top of that, it has access to 'Recover' to regain lost health and 'Reflect' to boost its own Defense stat. Overall, I believe that Alakazam is the best Pokemon in Gen 1.
If you guys have your own list of what you think were the most powerful Pokemon in Gen 1 or any criticisms or questions you may have, I'd love to hear them.

My take on this is: swap Alakazam to Zapdos's spot and drop Zapdos entirely.

Mewtwo and Mew would have been number 1 an 2 in that order although I did say in the beginning that I wouldn't include them on the list since both of the are in Uber and I'd acknowledge them separately from the list.
